RESTORE WEEKEND 04.20 & 04.21.2018

I had the wonderful opportunity to present my structured improvisational piece “Meet me in 10” at Restore Festival MKE (Milwaukee).

Jade Charon Robertson is a contemporary dance artist who recently graduated from the University of California Los Angelos with a Master of Fine Arts in dance. She created this festival to showcase women of color artist in/of Milwaukee artistry. They were given feedback and support in their future endeavors by other women in the field of dance. Also, this was a fundraising event for the many efforts she is committed to with her non-profit organization.  Here is an excerpt from the weekend events.

“Meet me in 10” is a 10 min(ish) structured improvisational dance piece about my life thus far. Trying to figure out who “ME” is while reminiscing about the past and the experience that I believe will help define me. The piece order starts with my family. It goes to my neighborhood, dancing in my neighborhood, dancing with West African Organization, High School, Military, Grad School, and Now. I’ve created and performed this piece in Senegal first. Then at The International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference and then in my hometown Milwaukee, WI at Restore Festival. Each time ive has done it I was very nervous. But there is something about performing at home that felt good. They KNEW all my jo0kes, dancing, people I’ve been around. Also, they were very supportive of the work I am doing. Because there aren’t many Black Women who are doing an improvisational dance (and in Milwaukee at that) to offer representation in this form as well as showcasing movement vocabulary of Black (Milwaukee Black) aesthetic is truly an honor. Representation is important. Opportunities are important. I am thankful there was a space for me to showcase my work.
